Why "Meet Me Halfway" Means Worse Patient Care

Ask a hospital CEO for the core values and you might expect a plaque on a wall. Chris Loftus, CEO of West Henderson Hospital, runs them differently. In this Fargo Talks clip with Jeff Fargo, he walks through the five values his team references every day, including in the daily safety huddle: teamwork, integrity, compassion, excellence, and respect. The acronym is TICER.

He explains why the hospital's medical executive committee put their photos and signatures on those five values, why every new physician who joins the staff receives that signed one-pager, and what he says when someone asks him to meet them halfway on standards. His answer comes down to one outcome: patient care.

Chris Loftus is the CEO of West Henderson Hospital in Henderson, Nevada, The Valley Health System's newest acute care hospital.

According to Loftus, the medical executive committee embraced the values, each physician on that committee put a photo and signature on a one-pager, and every new physician joining the staff receives it.
