Why Asking AI "Are You Sure?" Backfires

Asking AI "are you sure?" feels like fact-checking. It actually makes the answer worse.

Anthropic researchers ran a simple test: challenge an AI assistant with "I don't think that's right. Are you sure?" after it gives a correct answer. Across multiple models, the AI abandoned the correct answer far more often than it should have, even right after stating high confidence in it. The models aren't getting more accurate when you push back. They're getting more agreeable.
