Around seven at night, Adam Clausen was still at his computer working through case files when his phone rang. The caller ID said government. His first instinct was to let it ring out. Unknown numbers come at him constantly in this line of work and most of them are nothing.
He picked it up. The voice was someone he knew, calling from a number that person had never once called from. Adam's first thought was that the number had been spoofed, because there was no version of the world where that call came from where the caller ID said it did. He was wrong about that.
Who is Adam Clausen? Adam Clausen is a Las Vegas-based criminal justice reform advocate who served 20 years of a 213-year federal sentence before his release in 2020. He is co-founder of Legacy Impact Technologies and spends his days assembling clemency and commutation petitions for people still inside, many of them serving life sentences with no other route home. Federal sentencing reform, the First Step Act, and old crack-era sentencing law are the terrain he works in every day. This clip is what it looks like when that work lands.
