Adam Clausen spent the first ten years of his sentence inside a level-six maximum security federal penitentiary where large-scale riots were not theoretical events. They were lived. He was on the front line of more than one, knives in both hands, hoping the situation could still be talked out before bodies dropped.
In this clip from Fargo Talks, Adam tells Jeff Fargo what it actually felt like to find himself in those moments. The internal voice asking what he was even doing there. The catastrophes he managed to walk away from. And what happens to a person when years of that kind of exposure becomes normal. He calls it being tuned in at a different frequency. Most people who hear him describe it understand exactly what he means without ever having lived it.
Who is Adam Clausen? Adam Bentley Clausen is a Las Vegas–based criminal justice reform advocate and entrepreneur who served 20 years of a 213-year federal sentence for a 2000 armed-robbery spree in Philadelphia. He was released in August 2020 under the First Step Act's expanded compassionate release provision, with pro bono representation from Georgetown Law professor and FAMM board member Shon Hopwood. Today he is co-founder and CTO of Legacy Impact Technologies, an AI-powered reentry coaching platform, and co-founder of Legacy Impact Group. He is a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission's Sentence Impact Advisory Group and a named advocate for the Safer Supervision Act of 2025.
What is a federal prison riot? A federal prison riot is a large-scale, often weapon-involved disturbance inside a Bureau of Prisons facility, typically driven by gang dynamics, racial tension, contraband disputes, or facility conditions. In level-six maximum security penitentiaries, these incidents can involve dozens of inmates and improvised weapons, and they can escalate to lethal violence in seconds.
