In this clip from an episode of Fargo Talks, Nurse Erica joins Jeff Fargo to sound the alarm about SB 182, a bill that would have mandated safe nurse-to-patient ratios across Nevada. Despite passing both the state Senate and Assembly, Governor Lombardo vetoed the bill, halting what many believe could’ve been a game-changing improvement for patient safety and nurse working conditions.
Nurse Erica explains just how dangerous current hospital staffing is — and backs it up with data. For every extra patient assigned to a nurse beyond the recommended ratio, each patient’s risk of death or serious complication jumps up to 10%. Yet, the state’s top health leaders and even physician-politicians opposed the bill, claiming it would shut down hospitals — a claim Nurse Erica calls completely unsupported.
Even though SB 182 is dead for now, the fight isn’t over. Erica urges Nevadans to email their legislators and demand action on future efforts to pass similar legislation.
