Jeff Fargo sits with Nurse Erica@thenurseerica9094to break down retaliation in nursing. Real talk: nurses get assaulted, then told to complete “learning modules,” which later get used to say they “weren’t following procedure.” Report a safety risk and you’re suddenly on a performance improvement plan while your record gets picked apart. This isn’t rare. Healthcare workers are about 10% of the workforce but account for 48% of reported nonfatal workplace-violence injuries, and the rate in healthcare is more than triple all industries.
Many nurses don’t report violence at all. Surveys show as many as 80% stay quiet, often because they fear retaliation or believe nothing will change.
National Nurses United also found only 31.7% of nurses say their employer even has a clear way to report incidents, and fear of employer retaliation keeps reporting low.
The Joint Commission has flagged violence against healthcare workers as a serious safety issue, and OSHA offers guidance, but there’s still no specific federal OSHA standard in place.
